Subsumption architecture is a model of control based on the incremental construction of a network of simple processing elements assembled with special connectors, developed due to the research with highly reactive mobile robots. In this paper the employment of this methodology in computer vision is examined: a mobile focus of attention for detection of long edges in real outdoor scenes was implemented by a subsumption architecture. Some good results were obtained, in spite of the complexity of the images and the lack of extensive sensoring. The basic principles of subsumption architectures are also reviewed.
